Art Programs Banner Neighborhoods' Art Programs meet for three ten-week sessions throughout the year: Spring, Summer and Fall. Participants currently include youth and young adults ranging from 6-19 and adult volunteers as resident artists and visiting chefs. Exploring the range of what art can be, we’ve expanded art club to include culinary arts and other hands-on programming, like building and growing a garden. The Spring 2011 Art Programs are as follows: Tuesday 3pm-4:30pm: Garden Club, all ages Spring has finally sprung and so have the seedlings we planted! We have two large garden plots at our office where youth spend time digging, watering, composting, and watching the fruits of their labor grow. We look at worms and good bugs, the history of the vegetables we choose to plant, and include the harvests in our snacks and recipes for cooking club. Thursday 3pm-4:30pm: Cooking Club, ages 9 and up Youth prepare a meal from start to finish in our afterschool cooking club. Currently, we are traveling around the word. We invite adult neighborhood residents with varying cultural backgrounds to be “visiting chef” and share a part of their personal history with the youth. We look at the map, do internet research, and discuss traditions associated with the dish, such as the country’s pop music or style of dress. The culinary arts are a great opportunity to provide holistic learning as we explore nutrition and the power of vitamins, table manners, and document our experiences together with film and video. Friday 3pm-4:30pm: McElderry Park Art Club, all ages This program grew out of the last mural project we painted in the northern part of the neighborhood. Youth flocked to the wall asking questions, eager to hold a paint brush and leave their mark. Projects this spring include painting flower pots, building kites to fly in Patterson Park and mask making. (This program meets at the McElderry Park Resource Center, 611 N. Montford Avenue.) The Summer 2011 Art Programs are as follows: Bike Riding: Times and Locations TBD! A series of earn and learn workshops that will teach youth of all ages how to make easy repairs, secure, and ride a bicycle safely. Fashion Forward: Times and Locations TBD! A T-shirt design workshop culminating in a playground fashion show, “Fo-Show”! Check out some of the work our youth have produced! Playing Baseball Makes Me Thirsty |
